SHAKE WELL and enjoy...

Another ad from MAXIM magazine for SYNTHA-6 Protein drink.  The ad reads “SHAKE WELL and enjoy,” but some questions here are: what do you assume should be be shaken and enjoyed? The drink or the women?
The drink is sat upon the woman’s butt seemingly being used as a table.  This is an example of how women appear in ads as sexual accessories instead of the products they promote being the woman's accessory.  Also how does a protein drink relate to a woman’s rear?

  1. I agree that this ad is using this girl's body as an object and nothing else. Nothing else is featured in this add beside her butt which is still just a prop for the drink to sit.

  2. Shake well and enjoy is a comedic reference. As in the drink needs to be shaken and she could shake her rump aswell. And I'm sure any woman subjecting herself to those ads is well aware and okay with it. Not everyone is as shrewed and obviously mistreated as you bunch of angry and obviously lonely women...

  4. I am using this add for my gender studies class. We are supposed to write a complaint letter. I saw it last night in the maxium magazine but I refused to purchase the magazine because I did not want to support such an objectification. It's good to see others are noticing this and bringing it to the attention of others.

To the anonymous poster at 6:17pm - one does not need to be lonely and/or a mistreated women to be upset with how women are so inarticulately portrayed in the media. I am assuming you are a male? If so, there is no possible way you have ANY idea how it feels to be a women and seeing your body used as an advertising tool. Until you can know what that feels like, it is unfair for you to act like you know how this women feels. What if you had a daughter that was in that photo? (And, if you are a women, then why do you hate yourself, and your gender, so much? )

The fact is, money talks and no-one knows the whole story - who knows what this woman was told the add would look like... and you don't know her reasons for agreeing to it... so it is unfair to say that the women was well aware of what she was doing.

Bottom line - when we treat women as less-than-human, by only showing PARTS of them, women are seen as not whole, and as having less value. It becomes easier to treat them poorly, and be violent towards them.

The dehumanization of people to justify violence against them is something widespread and, unfortunately, is is not just a women's issue.

There are far better ways to sell this product than by distracting the eye with a women's behind.

  6. Those have got to be the most uncomfortable swimsuit bottoms on the planet. You have to think that if this was a human, and not an object, she'd be picking that wedgie.
